What Is a Security Screen?
In Australia, a product can only legally be called a security screen if it meets AS 5039, the Australian Standard covering the design, construction and installation of security screens and window grilles. To be classified as a security screen, a product has to pass six tests: dynamic impact, jemmy, pull, probe, knife shear and corrosion. The dynamic impact test alone requires the screen to withstand five direct hits of either 100 or 200 joules of force and stay within its frame.
That’s very different from a flyscreen. A flyscreen keeps insects out, using a lightweight mesh in a thin frame with crimped or riveted corners. It’s not designed to resist anyone trying to get through it. A genuine security screen uses a security-rated infill (mesh, aluminium sheet or grille) in a heavy-duty, welded frame, and it has to carry a compliance label to prove it’s been tested and installed to the standard.

Fixed Window Screens vs Hinge Window Screens
Security window screens come in two configurations.
FIXED WINDOW
Fixed window screens are permanently fitted over the opening, the most common and cost-effective option for windows you don’t need to access from outside.
HINGE WINDOW
Hinge window screens open outward or inward on hinges, giving you a second means of emergency escape and easier access for cleaning, while still locking securely and meeting the same AS 5039 standard when closed.
Our Security Screen Ranges
ForceField — near-invisible, virtually unbreakable
Woven from 316 marine-grade stainless steel mesh, ForceField is the option when you want the screen to disappear visually without giving up strength. It’s rated to Security Level 200 (SL200), the highest classification in the range, meaning it’s been tested to withstand five impacts of 200 joules each and stay in the frame. Available as both fixed and hinge window screens.
Protec — strong, perforated aluminium for coastal homes
Rather than a woven mesh, Protec uses a single sheet of perforated aluminium, giving extra rigidity and better resistance to salt air. It’s also SL200 rated and built with the same welded, seamless corners as ForceField, making it a strong choice if you’re closer to the coast or want a slightly more solid, private look.
Diamond — compliant security at a more accessible price
Diamond looks similar to non-compliant grille products at a glance, but it’s fully tested and rated to AS 5039 (SL100). You can choose Welded Diamond, where the frame and grille are powder coated in matching colours, or SnapLock, with a black grille and your choice of frame colour. It’s genuine, tested protection without the price tag of ForceField or Protec.
Screen Options That Aren’t Security Rated
Not every window needs a security screen, and we’ll always tell you plainly when a product isn’t AS 5039 compliant.
Guardian is a fall-prevention window screen, built to meet the National Construction Code requirements for child safety at height. It lets upper-storey windows open fully for airflow without becoming a fall risk, but it’s a safety product, not a security-rated one.
Insect screens are built on the same welded corners as the rest of the Prowler Proof range, so they won’t sag or gap the way a hardware-store flyscreen does, but they’re not tested or rated as security screens.

Frequently Asked Questions
Only to a small degree. ForceField in particular is designed to be as close to invisible as possible while still meeting AS 5039, so you keep your view and your airflow. Protec and Diamond both still allow ventilation, with slightly different levels of visibility depending on the infill.
Yes. Fixed and hinge window screens are available across the range, and if fall prevention is more relevant than forced-entry protection for a particular window, Guardian may be the better fit, we’ll advise on the right option for each opening during your free measure and quote.
Look for the Manufacturing Compliance Label confirming it’s passed AS 5039 testing. We can also provide you a compliance certificate on request.
